Summer Recap: Our Busiest Season Yet!

Mission Custom Landscaping | Serving Mission & the Lower Mainland

July kept our crews moving just as hard as June did, and August didn’t ease up either. From fence builds to retaining walls, yard revamps, and everything in between, our team’s been out delivering for clients across the Fraser Valley all summer long. Here’s a look at what we got done in this July & August Recap!

Transformations Across the Lower Mainland

River Rock Front Yard Conversion, Abbotsford, BC

Traded a patchy, tired lawn for a low-maintenance river rock bed with boulder accents. Excavated the old sod, hauled it out, and shaped fresh garden beds ready for planting. Sometimes less grass really does mean way less work.

Backyard Patio & Garden Bed Overhaul, Lake Errock, BC

This backyard needed a full reset. We tore out the old cracked patio pavers and a rotting railway tie step, then rebuilt with large-format concrete pavers, fresh cedar-edged garden beds, and a stepping stone path through crushed gravel. Before and after on this one is night and day.

Boulder Retaining Wall & Property Transformation, Mission, BC

One of the biggest summer jobs. This residential lot got massive boulder retaining walls to hold the grade, a dry river rock creek bed running through the front yard, natural stone edging along every bed line, and a full sod replacement to bring it all together. The homeowner is thrilled with how it turned out, and so are we.

3 Year Project Update!

Every once in a while, we like to check back in on an old project. We revisited a perennial garden bed and dry river rock feature we installed a few years back, and the plantings have filled in beautifully since. Good design holds up.

Maintenance Division

Staying on Top of It All

The maintenance crew has been busy all summer keeping up with our full client roster, from stratas to commercial contracts across the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver Area, as far as Squamish! Mission Junction, Ocean Trailers, and River Valley Ford have all continued to look sharp week after week. Our new mower has been putting in work all season and making quick work of even the bigger routes.

Squamish!

As summer winds down, we’re shifting focus off regular mowing and onto fall cleanups, prepping properties for the leaf drop and wet season ahead before it catches anyone off guard.

Landscaping Tips

Keep Your Yard Ready as Summer Winds Down

1. Aerate and Dethatch Lawn Before the Rainy Season Hits

Late summer is the ideal window to aerate compacted lawns, right before the fall rains help new growth take hold.

2. Check for Powdery Mildew on Plants

Cooler nights and lingering daytime heat create the perfect setup for powdery mildew on roses, lilacs, and other shrubs. Check leaves regularly and prune out affected growth.

3. Start Planning Fall Cleanups

Leaves will start dropping before you know it. Now’s a good time to book your fall cleanup before everyone else does.

4. Give Perennials a Late-Season Trim

Cutting back leggy perennials now encourages healthier growth next spring and keeps beds looking tidy through the fall transition.

The Complete Guide to Pavers: Types, Installation & Why They Last

Mission Custom Landscaping  |  Serving Mission & the Lower Mainland

Pavers are one of the smartest upgrades you can make to a property. They turn plain dirt, gravel, or cracked concrete into a clean, durable surface that lasts for decades, and they do it with more style and flexibility than almost any other material.

Whether you’re dreaming about a backyard patio, a welcoming front walkway, or a driveway that can actually handle a Fraser Valley winter, this guide walks you through what pavers are, the different types available, exactly how a proper installation goes, and how to keep them looking sharp for years.

Finished circular paver patio with fire pit and seating

The Basics

What Exactly Is a Paver?

A paver is a manufactured or natural stone unit, laid individually over a compacted base to create a solid surface for patios, walkways, driveways, and pool decks. Instead of one big slab, you get dozens or hundreds of interlocking pieces working together.

That single difference, many small units instead of one large pour, is why pavers outperform poured concrete in almost every way that matters.

They Don’t Crack Like Concrete

Our freeze-thaw winters are brutal on solid slabs. Because pavers flex slightly at every joint, the ground can shift without splitting your surface apart.

Easy to Repair

Stain or damage one paver? Lift it out and drop in a replacement. No jackhammer, no patchwork-looking concrete repair across the whole surface.

Ready to Use Immediately

There’s no long cure time. Once the final joint sand is swept in and compacted, you can walk, park, and entertain on it the same day.

Endless Design Options

Colours, shapes, patterns, and borders open up looks you simply can’t get from a flat grey pour, from classic herringbone to modern large-format stone.

Know Your Options

The Main Types of Pavers

Not all pavers are created equal. Here are the five you’ll come across most often, and where each one shines.

Concrete Pavers

The most popular and versatile choice. Molded in nearly any shape, colour, or texture, budget-friendly and tough enough for driveways.

Brick / Clay Pavers

Classic, timeless colour that never fades because it’s fired right into the clay. Perfect for traditional homes and heritage looks.

Natural Stone

Flagstone, granite, and travertine bring a high-end, one-of-a-kind look. No two pieces are identical, and the result feels premium.

Permeable Pavers

Designed with wider joints so rainwater drains straight through, cutting runoff and puddling. Great for eco-conscious builds and wet climates.

Porcelain Pavers

The modern option: ultra-low maintenance, stain- and scratch-resistant, with sleek large-format sizes and realistic stone or wood finishes.

Our Process

How We Install Pavers, Step by Step

A paver surface is only as good as what’s underneath it. Here’s how we build one that stays flat and level for the long haul, not just for the first season.

1. Excavation & Layout

We dig out the area to the right depth and set the grade with a slight slope, so water always drains away from your home instead of pooling on the surface.

2. Compacted Gravel Base

Crushed road base goes in and gets compacted in layers. This is the foundation, and it’s where most cheap installs cut corners. We don’t.

3. Bedding Sand Layer

A thin, precisely screeded layer of coarse sand gives each paver a level bed to settle into, locking everything to a consistent height.

4. Laying the Pattern

Pavers are placed one by one in your chosen pattern, with tight, even joints. Edges are custom-cut for a clean, finished border.

5. Edge Restraints

We lock the perimeter with sturdy edge restraints. This is what stops pavers from spreading or drifting apart over time.

6. Joint Sand & Final Compaction

Polymeric sand is swept into every joint and compacted in. It hardens to lock the pavers together, resist weeds, and keep ants out. Then it’s ready to use.

Applications

Where Pavers Work Best

Patios

A backyard living space that’s ready for the BBQ, the patio set, and years of summer evenings.

Walkways & Paths

Safe, level, and inviting routes to your front door, side gate, or garden, with instant curb appeal.

Driveways

Built to carry vehicle weight without cracking, and far easier to repair than a poured slab.

Pool Decks & Steps

Slip-resistant options that stay cooler underfoot and handle constant splashing with ease.

Long-Term Care

Keeping Your Pavers Looking New

Pavers are low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. A little care each year keeps them looking freshly installed.

Sweep & Rinse Regularly

A broom and the occasional hose-down keep debris and grit from grinding into the surface. It’s the single easiest way to protect the finish.

Tackle Stains Early

Oil, rust, or leaf stains lift out far more easily when they’re fresh. Spot-clean with a paver-safe cleaner before they set in.

Top Up the Joint Sand

Over the years a little joint sand can wash out. Refreshing it keeps the pavers locked tight and helps block weeds and ants.

Reseal for Protection

An optional sealer every few years deepens the colour, guards against stains, and makes routine cleaning even easier.

June Recap: A Summer of Fences, Yard Revamps & Fresh Sod Across the Fraser Valley

Mission Custom Landscaping  |  Serving Mission & the Lower Mainland

Summer’s in full swing. May kept our crews moving, and June didn’t slow down one bit, from fence builds across the Fraser Valley to retaining walls, yard revamps, and everything in between, our team has been out delivering for clients all month. Here’s a look at what we got done.

Construction Division

Transformations Across the Lower Mainland

Garden Bed Overhaul, Rural Mission, BC

These garden beds needed some serious attention, and now they’re looking sharp. Our crew hand-cleared every bed on the property, then got to work transforming each one. Most beds were laid with fabric and topped with a mix of 1–2 inch and 3–6 inch river rock for a clean, layered look that’s built to stay weed-free. The larger mounded bed got a different treatment, fresh mulch over the existing soil, giving it a refreshed, finished look. Clean, low-maintenance, and looking great. Before-and-after shots of the full transformation are coming soon on social media, keep an eye out.

Grub-Proof Front Yard, Mission, BC

This lawn had a grub problem that kept coming back year after year, leaving dead patches no amount of reseeding could fix. So we pulled it all out and went low-maintenance instead. Garden beds got refreshed with mulch and river rock bordered in natural boulders, the front entry got a clean gravel base, and a flagstone path now ties the side yard together. No more dead grass, no more replanting every spring, just a yard that looks good and doesn’t care what’s living underground.

Sod Install, Mission, BC

This front yard got a complete refresh with a full sod install, and the difference speaks for itself. Lush, even, and green from edge to edge, with the garden beds cleaned up and bordered to match. A simple project, but one of those transformations that makes a whole property look brand new.

Fencing, Mission, BC

This one’s for anyone still on the fence about privacy. We installed a full cedar fence line across this Mission property, solid panels topped with lattice for a finished look that doesn’t feel boxed in. Built to last, looks great from either side, and it’s exactly the kind of project we love taking on.

Peak Season Is Here, and the Crews Are Delivering

June has been our busiest month yet, and the crews have kept pace every step of the way. Mowing routes across residential and commercial accounts throughout the Fraser Valley have been packed, but everything’s getting done, lawns are looking sharp and on schedule.

On the commercial side, River Valley Ford continues to look great week after week, and our Ocean Trailer sites are looking better than ever. Mission Junction’s annuals are planted and adding a great pop of colour. We’ve also expanded into new territory this month with maintenance work in Langley, Surrey, and Chilliwack, including a few new contracts we’re excited to be taking on.

Below is a complete yard reclamation that turned an overgrown backyard into a clean, edged space. Take a look at the before and after.

We also welcomed Dane to the crew this month, and he’s hit the ground running.

Last but not least, keep an eye out on the road, our maintenance truck just got decals, with the rest of the fleet getting wrapped soon. You’ll be seeing a lot more of Mission Custom Landscaping out there this summer.

Landscaping Tips

Keep Your Yard Looking Good in the Summer Heat

1. Mow High, Not Short

July is peak heat-stress season. Cutting your lawn too short removes the shade grass needs to protect its own roots. Raise your mower deck and let the grass stay a little longer, it’ll hold colour and moisture far better.

2. Deep Water, Less Often

This is BC’s driest month. Frequent light watering trains roots to stay shallow and weak. A couple of deep soaks a week, early morning, beats daily sprinkling every time.

3. Watch for Spider Mites and Aphids

Hot, dry weather is prime time for pests on cedars, roses, and shrubs. Check the undersides of leaves for stippling or webbing. Caught early, it’s an easy fix.

4. Deadhead Your Flowering Plants

Snipping spent blooms off annuals and perennials keeps them pushing out new flowers instead of going to seed. A few minutes a week keeps colour going all summer.

5. Check Your Irrigation for Leaks or Dry Spots

A quick walk-through of your sprinkler system catches clogged heads or uneven coverage before they show up as brown patches.

Mission Custom Monthly Update

May Recap: Summer is Coming and We’re Ready!

May kept all our crews extremely busy, and we couldn’t be happier about it. From completed construction projects and major commercial collabs to cedar pruning and full lawn care in full swing — it was a big month across the Fraser Valley. Here’s a look at everything we got done.

Big Builds Across the Valley

Backyard Retaining Wall & Sodding — Mission, BC

We teased this one last month and it’s finally done — and the results speak for themselves. The custom wooden retaining wall is in, the sod is lush, and the whole yard has been transformed from a sloped, unusable space into a clean, functional backyard. Excavation, grading, drainage prep, and quality materials all came together to make this one a standout. The before and after on this project is one of our favourites yet.

Belgard Melville Planter Box — Hatzic Lake, Mission

A clean, modern planter box wrapping an established cedar hedge at a residential property right on Hatzic Lake. The crisp lines of the Belgard block tie in perfectly with the home’s dark trim and railings, backfilled with fresh topsoil and left ready for plantings. Small upgrade, huge visual impact.

Hatzic Lake

Commercial Lot Transformation — Fraser Way RV, Abbotsford

In collaboration with Leary Site Services

This one was a big one. Full site clearing of blackberry, brush, and shrubs along the building, banks, and perimeter — then we graded the lot, built out a large retaining wall, and finished with compacted gravel throughout. Proud to partner with Leary Site Services on a project of this scale, and thrilled with the final result at Fraser Way RV.

Maintenance Division

Peak Season is Here, and the Crews Are Delivering

May was one of our busiest maintenance months yet. Mowing is running at full pace across all our residential and commercial accounts throughout the Fraser Valley, lawns are looking great and the crews are locked in.

On the commercial side, our ongoing accounts at Mission Junction, Ocean Trailer Hatzic, and Ocean Trailer Mission Way are all well taken care of. We’re also proud to be maintaining the grounds at River Valley Ford in Mission, handling everything from mowing and weed whacking to garden bed cleanups and weeding, keeping a high-traffic commercial property looking sharp week in, week out.

River Valley Ford

May also brought a heavy round of cedar and hedge pruning across multiple residential and commercial properties, plus expanded commercial maintenance work reaching into Langley and Surrey this month.

June is already stacking up to be our busiest month of the year, routes are filling fast.

Mission

What to Focus on in June

Be Water Smart — Rising Temps + Water Restrictions

Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to grow deeper and keeps your lawn healthier through the heat. Early morning is always the best time to water, less evaporation, better absorption.

Prune After Blooms, Not Before

If your spring-flowering shrubs have finished blooming, now is the window to prune them without sacrificing next year’s flowers. Wait too long and you risk cutting off next season’s buds.

Keep an Eye on Your Lawn’s Health

If your lawn is showing yellowing or thinning patches heading into summer, it may be grub damage from last fall. Give us a call, we can assess and treat before it gets worse.

Top Up Your Garden Beds

A fresh layer of mulch or decorative rock in June helps lock in moisture, suppress weeds, and keep beds looking sharp all summer. It’s one of the best low-effort, high-impact things you can do.

Book Summer Projects NOW — Limited Availability

Retaining walls, patios, and hardscape projects are booking weeks in advance. If you’ve been thinking about it, now is the time to reach out before the summer slots are gone.

March and April Mission Custom Landscaping Update!

Mission Custom Monthly Update

March and April Recap: Spring is Here, and We are Busy!

March and April have been two of our biggest months yet. Our construction and maintenance crews have been running full speed across the Fraser Valley, from Coquitlam to Maple Ridge to Mission. Here is what we have been up to.

Construction Division

Big Builds Across the Valley

Our construction crew had a packed two months, with projects across the valley and a wide range of work from excavation and drainage to patios, retaining walls, grading, and finishing details.

In March, we completed retaining wall installations, drainage work, and excavation projects in Coquitlam in collaboration with Gorman Landscapes. We also wrapped up a standout Maple Ridge project featuring a large custom oval planter, permeable pavers, full regrading, and lawn prep. Around the same time, we completed a smaller artificial turf installation alongside Gorman Landscapes that came out clean, low maintenance, and sharp.

April kept the momentum going with more excavation, wall work, prep, and cleanup across the valley. One of the biggest highlights was a patio build at Mission Golf and Country Club, which will serve as the base for their upcoming snack shack. We also returned to Albion Developments in Maple Ridge to build an additional patio slab that will serve as a loading pad for excavators, another phase completed on a site we know well. We also took on a major blackberry removal and bank grading project, stripping a large steep bank of overgrowth and smoothing it out so the clients can propagate their own plants and bring the space back to life.

Maintenance Division

Spring Cleanups, Top Dressing and Mowing Season Begins

Our maintenance crews have been out in full force. March was all about getting properties ready for the season with spring cleanups, top dressing, lawn prep, and general maintenance across residential and commercial accounts.

We continued our ongoing work with major commercial clients, including Mission Junction, Ocean Trailer Hatzic, and Ocean Trailer Mission Way, along with a wide range of residential properties throughout the valley.

As of April, mowing season has officially begun. The crews are out, and the lawns are looking sharp. If you are not already on a maintenance schedule, now is the time to get set up before our routes fill up.

Major Project Completion: Albion Developments – Maple Ridge

One of the largest projects we completed this month was at Albion Developments, located across from Bruce’s Market in Maple Ridge.

This was a major transformation project involving significant excavation, grading, and structural hardscape installation.

Here’s what was completed:

  • A large retaining wall installed along the property

  • Expansion of the lower parking lot by creating usable space below the wall

  • Removal of overgrown brush, prickles, and mud from the upper field

  • Re-grading to improve usability and drainage

  • Construction of a new gravel parking lot in the corner of the property

  • Installation of a boulder planter with plants and mulch around the existing tree

  • A clean staircase connecting the lower and upper parking lots using Belgard block

What was once an overgrown and unusable space is now structured, accessible, and functional.

Full before-and-after images, as well as the process of it all, some crazy drone shots and other content, will be shared soon on our social media.

New Project Starting in Coquitlam

We’re also kicking off a new project in Coquitlam in collaboration with Gorman Landscaping. The project involves multiple retaining walls, excavation, and large-scale site preparation.

We’ll be sharing more details as work progresses.

Landscaping Tips for March

March is when landscaping season truly begins in Mission and throughout the Fraser Valley. While the weather can still vary, this is the month that sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Here are a few key things to focus on:

  • Book your Spring Cleanup early. Removing winter debris, trimming back damaged material, and preparing garden beds gives your lawn a clean start.
  • Inspect drainage and low spots. Winter rain often exposes problem areas. Addressing pooling water early prevents bigger issues later.
  • Avoid heavy traffic on wet lawns. Compacted soil can slow grass recovery as temperatures rise.
  • Plan larger construction projects now. Retaining walls, excavation, and hardscape work book quickly once dry weather arrives.

March is about getting ahead. The work done now makes everything smoother in April and May.

If you’re planning Spring landscaping, lawn care, excavation, or retaining wall work, now is the time to start the conversation. Investing in professional landscaping in Mission BC early in the season can help prevent larger repairs later and ensure your property stays ahead of growth cycles.

February Blog: Landscaping Maintenance Update in Mission & Fraser Valley

Landscaping Maintenance Work Across Mission & the Fraser Valley

February has been a steady month for our landscaping maintenance team, with crews continuing to service both commercial and residential properties throughout Mission and the Fraser Valley.

On the commercial side, our team has continued regular maintenance work for larger sites such as Mission Junction and Ocean Trailer. These properties rely on consistent scheduling and dependable service year-round, and our crews have stayed on top of site cleanliness and overall property presentation throughout the winter season.

Residential Maintenance Services Through the Winter Season

Alongside our commercial work, we’ve continued providing maintenance services for residential properties across Mission and nearby communities. Ongoing winter maintenance helps protect lawns, garden beds, and landscape features while setting properties up for a smoother transition into spring.

Even during the colder months, staying ahead of debris, drainage issues, and general wear can make a big difference once the growing season begins.

Getting Ready for Spring Cleanup & Lawn Care Season

As we head toward early spring, our maintenance team is now preparing for spring cleanups, lawn mowing, and full lawn care services. This is one of the busiest times of year, and many clients are already booking ahead to secure their spot for the season.

If you’re planning ahead for:

  • Spring cleanups

  • Lawn mowing and lawn care

  • Ongoing residential or commercial landscape maintenance

Now is a great time to get in touch and pre-book your services.

Connecting with Homeowners at the Home Show

We also recently attended the Fraser Valley Home and Outdoor Living Expo at Abbotsford Tradex, where we had the opportunity to connect with homeowners, answer questions, and discuss upcoming landscaping plans for the year. It was great meeting members of the community and helping people think ahead to spring maintenance and outdoor care.

February Landscaping Tips: How to Prepare Your Property for Spring

February may still feel like winter, but it’s a key month for setting your landscape up for success once spring arrives. In Mission and throughout the Fraser Valley, the combination of cool temperatures, moisture, and occasional frost means a little attention now can prevent bigger issues later.

One of the most important February tasks is cleaning up debris. Fallen branches, leaves, and organic material left sitting on lawns or garden beds can trap moisture and lead to disease once temperatures warm. Clearing these areas now helps protect turf and allows soil to dry and breathe properly as spring approaches.

February is also a good time to check drainage and low spots around your property. Winter rainfall often reveals problem areas where water pools or flows toward foundations, walkways, or garden beds. Identifying these issues early makes it easier to plan solutions before spring growth begins.

For lawns, it’s best to avoid heavy foot traffic during wet or frosty conditions. Compacted soil can slow grass recovery and create bare patches that are harder to fix later in the season. If moss is present, February is a good time to note problem areas so they can be addressed once conditions are right in early spring.

Garden beds benefit from a light refresh this time of year. Removing dead plant material and lightly tidying beds helps reduce pests and disease while improving the appearance of your landscape. However, it’s still best to avoid aggressive pruning until the risk of hard frost has passed.

February is also an ideal time to plan ahead for spring landscaping services. Booking early for spring cleanups, lawn care, and maintenance ensures you’re scheduled when the season begins and helps avoid delays during peak demand.

Whether you manage your own property or work with a professional landscaping team, taking small, proactive steps in February can save time, reduce costs, and lead to a healthier, better-looking landscape in the months ahead.

2025 Update

Hey, it’s Dexter from Mission Custom Landscaping! As we head into our 5th season, I wanted to take a moment to share an update on everything that’s been happening since my last blog post in 2021. A lot has changed, and we’re excited to keep growing and serving our community with top-notch landscaping services.

We’re currently operating two divisions, each with its own dedicated crew. I’m running the design-build division, where I’m fortunate to collaborate with Toby and David from Adkins Landscape Design. Together, we’re creating stunning 2D and 3D designs that bring our clients’ visions to life. Our partnership has allowed us to deliver exceptional results, and we’re proud of the work we’ve accomplished so far.

Over the past few years, we’ve been intentional about aligning ourselves with industry leaders to ensure we’re offering the highest quality products and services. We’re proud to be part of Belgard’s authorized contractor program, and last season, we completed the Allan Block certification course to further enhance our hardscaping expertise. Additionally, we’re members of Kichler Landscape Lighting and NDS Drainage, two brands known for their premium products.

Speaking of certifications, I recently completed Aquascape University, which has allowed us to expand into water feature installations. These projects have been a fantastic addition to our portfolio, and we’re excited to take on more in the future. On a personal note, in 2023, I also completed my Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in accounting and a minor in finance. This has been a huge step forward in helping me manage and grow the business more effectively.

The last few years have been incredibly rewarding. We’ve completed numerous projects, and the feedback from our clients has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s been a joy to see so many happy customers enjoying their transformed outdoor spaces. Last year marked my first year working full-time with the company, and it was a game-changer. We had the opportunity to collaborate with builders, general contractors, excavation companies, designers, landscape architects, and engineers on some truly amazing projects.

This year is shaping up to be even more exciting, with plenty of incredible opportunities on the horizon. We have a talented crew and the right equipment to tackle any outdoor project, big or small. Whether it’s a custom design, a water feature, or a full-scale landscape transformation, we’re ready to bring your vision to life.

On the other side of the business, Rylan Elson has taken over our landscape maintenance division. This division has seen significant growth, and we recently purchased a dump truck to improve efficiency, especially for our commercial contracts. Some of our notable clients include the Ocean Trailer Mission location and The Junction, along with several high-end residential properties. We’re committed to maintaining the same level of excellence in our maintenance services as we do in our design-build projects.

As we look ahead to the 2025 season, we’re filled with gratitude for the support we’ve received and excitement for what’s to come. Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with their outdoor spaces—we couldn’t do it without you. If you’re considering a landscaping project, we’d love to work with you to create something truly special.

Here’s to another great season ahead!

Mission Custom Landscaping Solutions

Hello everyone. In this first post of the Mission Custom Landscaping Blog I would like to introduce the company. We are a landscaping company run by Dexter Weymann. Our motto is: to deliver solution-driven results that provide our customers with a long-lasting impact on their property at a competitive price.

We are excited this year to service many people’s landscaping needs in the Fraser Valley this Summer. We believe that we can make a big difference in the industry and make some great connections along the way.

I have been working really hard to get the company going and I can’t wait to get more clients, hire more staff, and learn a ton. If you want to get to know me better or have any questions feel free to call me and ill be happy to chat.

Thanks,

Dexter Weymann, Owner Mission Custom Landscaping Solutions
