March and April Mission Custom Landscaping Update!

Mission Custom Monthly Update

March and April Recap: Spring is Here, and We are Busy!

March and April have been two of our biggest months yet. Our construction and maintenance crews have been running full speed across the Fraser Valley, from Coquitlam to Maple Ridge to Mission. Here is what we have been up to.

Construction Division

Big Builds Across the Valley

Our construction crew had a packed two months, with projects across the valley and a wide range of work from excavation and drainage to patios, retaining walls, grading, and finishing details.

In March, we completed retaining wall installations, drainage work, and excavation projects in Coquitlam in collaboration with Gorman Landscapes. We also wrapped up a standout Maple Ridge project featuring a large custom oval planter, permeable pavers, full regrading, and lawn prep. Around the same time, we completed a smaller artificial turf installation alongside Gorman Landscapes that came out clean, low maintenance, and sharp.

April kept the momentum going with more excavation, wall work, prep, and cleanup across the valley. One of the biggest highlights was a patio build at Mission Golf and Country Club, which will serve as the base for their upcoming snack shack. We also returned to Albion Developments in Maple Ridge to build an additional patio slab that will serve as a loading pad for excavators, another phase completed on a site we know well. We also took on a major blackberry removal and bank grading project, stripping a large steep bank of overgrowth and smoothing it out so the clients can propagate their own plants and bring the space back to life.

Maintenance Division

Spring Cleanups, Top Dressing and Mowing Season Begins

Our maintenance crews have been out in full force. March was all about getting properties ready for the season with spring cleanups, top dressing, lawn prep, and general maintenance across residential and commercial accounts.

We continued our ongoing work with major commercial clients, including Mission Junction, Ocean Trailer Hatzic, and Ocean Trailer Mission Way, along with a wide range of residential properties throughout the valley.

As of April, mowing season has officially begun. The crews are out, and the lawns are looking sharp. If you are not already on a maintenance schedule, now is the time to get set up before our routes fill up.

Mission Custom Landscaping – February Recap and Spring Preparation!

February Recap: Major Projects, Snow Management & Spring Preparation

Landscaping in Mission BC stayed busy throughout February as both our maintenance and construction crews completed major projects across the Fraser Valley.

Supporting Abbotsford Through Snow & Ice

Throughout February, our maintenance and construction teams assisted Northwind Snow and Ice Management, helping keep sidewalks and commercial properties safe across Abbotsford. Salting and monitoring icy conditions ensured pedestrian areas remained accessible during fluctuating winter weather.

Winter weather doesn’t stop work; it just shifts focus.

Major Project Completion: Albion Developments – Maple Ridge

One of the largest projects we completed this month was at Albion Developments, located across from Bruce’s Market in Maple Ridge.

This was a major transformation project involving significant excavation, grading, and structural hardscape installation.

Here’s what was completed:

  • A large retaining wall installed along the property

  • Expansion of the lower parking lot by creating usable space below the wall

  • Removal of overgrown brush, prickles, and mud from the upper field

  • Re-grading to improve usability and drainage

  • Construction of a new gravel parking lot in the corner of the property

  • Installation of a boulder planter with plants and mulch around the existing tree

  • A clean staircase connecting the lower and upper parking lots using Belgard block

What was once an overgrown and unusable space is now structured, accessible, and functional.

Full before-and-after images, as well as the process of it all, some crazy drone shots and other content, will be shared soon on our social media.

New Project Starting in Coquitlam

We’re also kicking off a new project in Coquitlam in collaboration with Gorman Landscaping. The project involves multiple retaining walls, excavation, and large-scale site preparation.

We’ll be sharing more details as work progresses.

Landscaping Tips for March

March is when landscaping season truly begins in Mission and throughout the Fraser Valley. While the weather can still vary, this is the month that sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Here are a few key things to focus on:

  • Book your Spring Cleanup early. Removing winter debris, trimming back damaged material, and preparing garden beds gives your lawn a clean start.
  • Inspect drainage and low spots. Winter rain often exposes problem areas. Addressing pooling water early prevents bigger issues later.
  • Avoid heavy traffic on wet lawns. Compacted soil can slow grass recovery as temperatures rise.
  • Plan larger construction projects now. Retaining walls, excavation, and hardscape work book quickly once dry weather arrives.

March is about getting ahead. The work done now makes everything smoother in April and May.

If you’re planning Spring landscaping, lawn care, excavation, or retaining wall work, now is the time to start the conversation. Investing in professional landscaping in Mission BC early in the season can help prevent larger repairs later and ensure your property stays ahead of growth cycles.

February Blog: Landscaping Maintenance Update in Mission & Fraser Valley

Landscaping Maintenance Work Across Mission & the Fraser Valley

February has been a steady month for our landscaping maintenance team, with crews continuing to service both commercial and residential properties throughout Mission and the Fraser Valley.

On the commercial side, our team has continued regular maintenance work for larger sites such as Mission Junction and Ocean Trailer. These properties rely on consistent scheduling and dependable service year-round, and our crews have stayed on top of site cleanliness and overall property presentation throughout the winter season.

Residential Maintenance Services Through the Winter Season

Alongside our commercial work, we’ve continued providing maintenance services for residential properties across Mission and nearby communities. Ongoing winter maintenance helps protect lawns, garden beds, and landscape features while setting properties up for a smoother transition into spring.

Even during the colder months, staying ahead of debris, drainage issues, and general wear can make a big difference once the growing season begins.

Getting Ready for Spring Cleanup & Lawn Care Season

As we head toward early spring, our maintenance team is now preparing for spring cleanups, lawn mowing, and full lawn care services. This is one of the busiest times of year, and many clients are already booking ahead to secure their spot for the season.

If you’re planning ahead for:

  • Spring cleanups

  • Lawn mowing and lawn care

  • Ongoing residential or commercial landscape maintenance

Now is a great time to get in touch and pre-book your services.

Connecting with Homeowners at the Home Show

We also recently attended the Fraser Valley Home and Outdoor Living Expo at Abbotsford Tradex, where we had the opportunity to connect with homeowners, answer questions, and discuss upcoming landscaping plans for the year. It was great meeting members of the community and helping people think ahead to spring maintenance and outdoor care.

February Landscaping Tips: How to Prepare Your Property for Spring

February may still feel like winter, but it’s a key month for setting your landscape up for success once spring arrives. In Mission and throughout the Fraser Valley, the combination of cool temperatures, moisture, and occasional frost means a little attention now can prevent bigger issues later.

One of the most important February tasks is cleaning up debris. Fallen branches, leaves, and organic material left sitting on lawns or garden beds can trap moisture and lead to disease once temperatures warm. Clearing these areas now helps protect turf and allows soil to dry and breathe properly as spring approaches.

February is also a good time to check drainage and low spots around your property. Winter rainfall often reveals problem areas where water pools or flows toward foundations, walkways, or garden beds. Identifying these issues early makes it easier to plan solutions before spring growth begins.

For lawns, it’s best to avoid heavy foot traffic during wet or frosty conditions. Compacted soil can slow grass recovery and create bare patches that are harder to fix later in the season. If moss is present, February is a good time to note problem areas so they can be addressed once conditions are right in early spring.

Garden beds benefit from a light refresh this time of year. Removing dead plant material and lightly tidying beds helps reduce pests and disease while improving the appearance of your landscape. However, it’s still best to avoid aggressive pruning until the risk of hard frost has passed.

February is also an ideal time to plan ahead for spring landscaping services. Booking early for spring cleanups, lawn care, and maintenance ensures you’re scheduled when the season begins and helps avoid delays during peak demand.

Whether you manage your own property or work with a professional landscaping team, taking small, proactive steps in February can save time, reduce costs, and lead to a healthier, better-looking landscape in the months ahead.

2025 Update

Hey, it’s Dexter from Mission Custom Landscaping! As we head into our 5th season, I wanted to take a moment to share an update on everything that’s been happening since my last blog post in 2021. A lot has changed, and we’re excited to keep growing and serving our community with top-notch landscaping services.

We’re currently operating two divisions, each with its own dedicated crew. I’m running the design-build division, where I’m fortunate to collaborate with Toby and David from Adkins Landscape Design. Together, we’re creating stunning 2D and 3D designs that bring our clients’ visions to life. Our partnership has allowed us to deliver exceptional results, and we’re proud of the work we’ve accomplished so far.

Over the past few years, we’ve been intentional about aligning ourselves with industry leaders to ensure we’re offering the highest quality products and services. We’re proud to be part of Belgard’s authorized contractor program, and last season, we completed the Allan Block certification course to further enhance our hardscaping expertise. Additionally, we’re members of Kichler Landscape Lighting and NDS Drainage, two brands known for their premium products.

Speaking of certifications, I recently completed Aquascape University, which has allowed us to expand into water feature installations. These projects have been a fantastic addition to our portfolio, and we’re excited to take on more in the future. On a personal note, in 2023, I also completed my Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in accounting and a minor in finance. This has been a huge step forward in helping me manage and grow the business more effectively.

The last few years have been incredibly rewarding. We’ve completed numerous projects, and the feedback from our clients has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s been a joy to see so many happy customers enjoying their transformed outdoor spaces. Last year marked my first year working full-time with the company, and it was a game-changer. We had the opportunity to collaborate with builders, general contractors, excavation companies, designers, landscape architects, and engineers on some truly amazing projects.

This year is shaping up to be even more exciting, with plenty of incredible opportunities on the horizon. We have a talented crew and the right equipment to tackle any outdoor project, big or small. Whether it’s a custom design, a water feature, or a full-scale landscape transformation, we’re ready to bring your vision to life.

On the other side of the business, Rylan Elson has taken over our landscape maintenance division. This division has seen significant growth, and we recently purchased a dump truck to improve efficiency, especially for our commercial contracts. Some of our notable clients include the Ocean Trailer Mission location and The Junction, along with several high-end residential properties. We’re committed to maintaining the same level of excellence in our maintenance services as we do in our design-build projects.

As we look ahead to the 2025 season, we’re filled with gratitude for the support we’ve received and excitement for what’s to come. Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with their outdoor spaces—we couldn’t do it without you. If you’re considering a landscaping project, we’d love to work with you to create something truly special.

Here’s to another great season ahead!
